About The Shire
The Shire is a persistent shared building world where players create towns, cities, landmarks and infrastructure that remain part of a living map. Building is the center of the server, supported by survival play, railway travel, leaderboards, seasonal hunts, competitions and a membership path that gradually opens access to the main wilderness.
What Makes It Different
The Shire combines a genuinely persistent main world with an unusually developed transport network. Its railway system links hundreds of player-built stations across themed towns and cities, making travel and infrastructure part of the server’s identity rather than just a convenience.
Freebuild is a Minecraft building mode centered on creating structures and landscapes without a required combat, quest, or level-progression path.
Player-created buildings, towns, landmarks, and public infrastructure form the server's central activity.
A persistent world is a Minecraft server world that keeps its player-made changes and ongoing progress across repeated visits.
The main world has remained intact since 2010, preserving player cities, landmarks, railways, and projects across visits.
Building is the main activity. Players explore existing cities, choose a place for a new project, gather or receive materials according to their rank, and develop original buildings, towns, landmarks and public infrastructure. The server also supports survival play, railway travel, warps, leaderboards and occasional competitive activities.
New visitors begin as Gaijin and can explore, chat and travel but cannot build freely. After applying for membership, players receive access to the Tyrule building world, where a plot serves as an introduction to their style. Promotion to Yeoman opens building in the main-world wilderness, with higher ranks recognizing increasingly developed work and community contribution.
The server has custom ranks, membership worlds, warps, leaderboards, a live map and a large railway system operated through custom in-game and website tools. The railway network currently lists 605 stations across 77 lines, with custom station buildings, tunnels and bridges.
The main world is a permanent, player-shaped setting made up of cities, villages, nations, themed regions, historic landmarks and extensive rail connections. Its builds have their own local styles and lore, so the map feels more like a continuing shared world than a sequence of disposable survival seasons.
PvP is opt-in rather than a central server-wide focus. Players may not fight without the consent of everyone involved, and the survival world also prohibits stealing and griefing.
Recurring activities include treasure hunts, building competitions, seasonal events and sports-style tournaments such as Chicken Ball. Treasure hunts use several locations and leaderboard scoring, while building competitions give players a separate space with their own construction rules.
The community is organized around membership applications, forums, Discord, guided building standards and long-term shared projects. New players can explore before applying, then use the Tyrule world to demonstrate their building style and get help from staff or established members.
Builds must be original and should fit the surrounding architecture. The rules set minimum spacing between projects, restrict copying and schematics, prohibit griefing and stealing in survival, forbid unconsented PvP, and limit disruptive machines or performance-heavy constructions. Staff may relocate abandoned or rule-breaking projects.
The server is free to play and accepts donations to cover operating costs. Donations of at least $15 can provide a rank upgrade for eligible members, but the server also promotes merit-based rank promotions and does not present donations as a required service fee.
A connected Minecraft railway system lets players travel between settlements, stations, regions, and destinations using dedicated routes.
The Shire's railway network links 605 stations across 77 lines through custom stations, tunnels, bridges, and integrated in-game tools.
A membership building path uses applications, demonstrations, and approvals to grant increasingly broad access to shared construction areas.
Visitors begin as Gaijin, build an assessment project in Tyrule after applying, and can later earn Yeoman access to main-world wilderness.
Building standards are rules and expectations governing originality, placement, style, spacing, and compatibility with surrounding player-made projects.
The Shire requires original builds, regulates spacing and architectural fit, restricts copying, and may relocate abandoned or rule-breaking projects.
Organized exploration activities in which players follow clues or compete to locate buried, hidden, or revealed rewards.
The Shire runs multi-location treasure hunts with leaderboard scoring, giving players an organized exploration challenge across the shared world.
Consent-based PvP restricts player combat to agreed encounters or designated areas, reducing unwanted fighting in shared survival spaces.
Players may not fight without everyone's consent, while stealing and griefing are also prohibited in the survival world.
Building competitions challenge players to create structures around a prompt or theme, with entries compared through judging, recognition, or awards.
The server hosts construction competitions in separate spaces with their own building rules, alongside its ordinary long-term projects.
A dynamic live map displays the server world and its player-created geography through an externally viewable interactive map.
The Shire provides a dedicated Dynmap showing its persistent cities, regions, infrastructure, and other developments as the world changes.
Merit-based promotions reward demonstrated contribution, skill, or community participation by advancing players through an organized rank structure.
Beyond membership access, higher ranks recognize increasingly developed building work and contribution, while eligible members can also progress through merit.

History of The Shire
The Shire began on October 15, 2010 after the loss of the earlier Fraggle Rock world. Its first welcome build was a stone “HI” sign, and the original world developed into the Mainland, the server’s first major city and the starting point for its road and railway systems.
The server became public in December 2010 after the Odd Facade Resort appeared in an early video, followed by a second widely viewed video in January 2011. Rapid growth brought griefing and led to stricter building standards, rank progression and limits on who could build in the most important areas. The resulting movement of builders helped establish new towns and regions beyond the Mainland.
The main world has remained intact since its creation. A separate vanilla-like survival world opened in 2024 and was refreshed in December 2025, while the long-running main world continued to preserve its older cities, railways, landmarks and player projects.
