Sarastus drops you into a huge custom medieval kingdom where every patch of land belongs to the Crown or one of its player lords. After a prologue that tests your patience, you reach the Kaldavuori mine, walk to Sarok castle and look for work. You cannot craft wooden or stone tools, and mining without the landowner's permission breaks the law, so your first coins come from working for other players.
The server is in Finnish and runs on Java with a required resource pack. Expect hunger, thirst, cold nights, wolves and thieves. Roleplay can bring violence, crime and mature themes, so the team strongly recommends it for players 16 and older. There is no hard age limit; younger players should ask a parent first.
What Makes It Different
It is a whole society, not a survival map: a king, eleven player-run counties, written laws, courts, fines and prison, with coins that are real items you can hide or have stolen.

You play a character such as a blacksmith, baker, farmer, guard or criminal. Chat is split into local, global and whisper channels, and staff step in as little as possible so players drive the story.
The huge custom map is ruled by a king and split into eleven counties, such as Halla, Aura and Valkeavuo, each led by a lord who can set local laws. All land is owned, so you need permission to build or mine.
Killing another player is allowed only with a good roleplay reason, never just for loot. Leaving during a fight or an arrest is against the rules.
The money is the crown, split into 100 pennies, and it is a physical item. You earn it by working, trading and selling to chest shops, and a central bank offers accounts and written payment orders.
The server is run by a Finnish non-profit roleplay association, and players keep a wiki of counties, families and historical events, from wars to festivals and chess tournaments.
Only vanilla clients plus a short list of allowed mods, such as Optifine and Essential; X-ray style packs are banned. Theft is allowed in roleplay but capped at half of a victim's property, and griefing builds or the landscape is banned.
The server is free and says it will stay free. Any paid extras in the future would be cosmetic, such as hats, with no gameplay advantage.
Smiths forge medieval arms like the greatsword, war hammer, war club and pole weapon.
Eleven player-run counties, each led by a lord, offer homes, jobs and their own local laws under the king.
Sarastus is free, and any future paid items are promised to be cosmetic only, like hats.
Many recipes are changed: wooden and stone tools cannot be made, so you work toward buying iron ones.
A central bank keeps accounts and handles written payment orders for the crown and penny coins.
Locks need keys cut to a code, and a lock left unused for three months rusts open.
You buy tools and sell goods through shop chests at Sarok castle and in player cities.
Counties, government offices and player businesses hand out jobs and titles, from smith to guard.
A required pack loads on join and reworks textures, hats and items to fit the medieval setting.

History of Sarastus
Early 2025 was a busy rebuild. In late February the team heavily reworked the resource pack and removed vanilla features that did not fit a medieval world, and through March wolves became far more dangerous and siege rules were written down.
Those rules were soon put to use. The first Sarastus war, between the county of Halla and the Prefecture of Viisi Totuus, ended on 25 June 2025.
The kingdom kept tightening its laws after that. In August 2025 unused locks began to rust open after three months, and in February 2026 theft was capped at half of a victim's property.
