About Team Byte: The Backrooms
Last updated
Team Byte: The Backrooms turns the Backrooms creepypasta into a horror RPG. You start in Level 0, a maze of yellow walls, buzzing lights and worn carpet with almost nothing to loot. Find an odd corner, walk into it and no-clip out before your sanity drains away.
Sanity drops in the dark, when you are hurt or hungry, and when entities like Smilers and Grinners get close. Almond water and other players help it recover. Deeper levels hold bases, traders, weapons, armor and bosses you summon with special items. It runs on Java Edition in English, with an optional Fabric client pack.
What Makes It Different
The whole server is built around the Backrooms: numbered levels you no-clip between, a sanity meter that can kill you, and entities taken straight from the creepypasta.
You survive entities, sanity drain and summoned bosses rather than fighting players.
A horror RPG with levels, gear, entities and bosses based on the Backrooms.
You explore one level at a time, scavenge chests and crates, and look for the exit to the next level. Staying near other players and drinking almond water keeps your sanity up, while darkness and entities pull it down.
Warpcores unlock warps to levels you have reached, so you can jump back without walking. Better gear comes from deeper levels, from Crowbars and Baseball Bats up to Titanium and Nocticite weapons and armor.
Levels run from the Frontrooms and the Laboratory intro through Level 0 to Level 7, with The Hub as a long safe tunnel linking the main levels. Level 1 has explorer bases and the Trader's Keep, Level 5 is the Terror Hotel, and there are ending levels and a few joke rooms to find.
Seasonal events add their own items, such as the Fence Arc in 2025 and Winterfest and April Fools in 2026.
The official wiki covers every level, entity and item, and only allows content that is really in the game. New levels are added over time, with more already marked as coming soon.
Fight back with a crowbar, baseball bat, taser, blaster or steampunk hammer, and suit up in Tough, Titanium or Nocticite armor.
Bosses such as the Titan never appear by chance: you summon them with a special item when you are ready.
More than a dozen Backrooms entities roam the levels, from Smilers and Wretches to Skin Stealers, Hounds and Deathmoths.
Crates and crate keys sit alongside level bundles and tokens among the special items you can collect.
Seasonal events like Winterfest and April Fools bring limited items you can only get while they run.
Entities, items and music need the server's resource pack, and the client pack loads it for you along with a custom join menu.
The official Fabric client pack includes voice chat that works on the server, so your group can talk in the dark halls.

History of Team Byte: The Backrooms
Team Byte released The Backrooms on July 23, 2024, after a rework of the server's code, and it has run as a horror RPG on Java ever since.
In 2025 the team published an official Fabric client pack with voice chat, a custom join menu and the resource pack built in. That year the Fence Arc event brought its own items, and 2026 added Winterfest and an April Fools event.
