Progression runs through Pokémon collection, training, gym challenges and competitive battles. Legendary Pokémon can appear in the world, while shrines and boss encounters add ways to pursue rare Pokémon items and masterballs.

Custom Pixelmon plugins, side mods, server-built gyms, special spawn areas, legendary shrines and boss drops give the network its strongest custom features.

The survival world includes custom-built spawn areas and gyms, with randomly appearing shrines tied to legendary encounters. Grief Prevention protects claimed building areas.

PvP centers on competitive Pixelmon battles, gym challenges and arena-style fights. The network has supported both player-led gym roles and organized combat areas.

The server has used a player economy with point-shop features, voting rewards and trade-focused survival play. Legendary Pokémon and masterballs have also been obtainable through gameplay rather than requiring a donation.

PokePlanet has a staff-visible, community-focused style built around shared spawn areas, trading, gym leadership and direct player interaction. English is used in public chat, with private messages available for other languages.

Core rules prohibit hacking, cheating, exploit abuse, advertising, spam, impersonation and harassment. AFK pools, forced Pixelmon spawning and staff-item begging are also prohibited. Public chat is English-only, and apricorn farms have had a 10-by-10 size limit.

The network has used donation ranks, point-shop perks and voting rewards. It has also offered a free trainer rank through website registration and Minecraft account linking, while major Pixelmon rewards could be earned through play.
