About Ottonien
Ottonien is a serious medieval roleplay server set in a realistic version of the 14th century. There are no elves, magic systems or fantasy races. Your character belongs in the setting, and much of the game happens through conversations, local chat and social choices.
What Makes It Different
Ottonien makes ordinary Minecraft tasks part of a believable medieval life. Your skills, work and relationships matter as much as your gear, while Gefolge can turn small settlements into fiefs and larger political powers.
Medieval servers place Minecraft play in a period-inspired world where castles, villages, farms, roads, and trade shape what players build and pursue.
The entire setting and building style focus on a realistic 14th-century world.
Roleplay is Minecraft gameplay where players act as characters in a shared fictional world and make choices from those characters’ perspectives.
Text-based medieval roleplay is the server's central activity.
An RPG server makes Minecraft revolve around developing a character through adventures, combat, and other challenges.
Characters develop through skills, talents, quests and role-based progression.
Factions is a Minecraft multiplayer mode where players join organized groups, build shared bases, and compete with rival groups for territory, resources, and strategic advantage.
Gefolge organize players into territorial groups with fiefs, diplomacy and conflicts.
Custom Items are server-created weapons, tools, armor, or usable objects with abilities or properties beyond Minecraft’s standard items.
The resourcepack supports extensive historical equipment, food, tools and building materials.
Start with a character that fits the medieval setting, then meet people through local chat and take on a role in the world. You can join a Gefolge, help build its fief, work in a trade or craft, follow quests, explore settlements and ruins, or take part in political conflicts. The server uses a custom resourcepack for its items, menus, blocks and equipment.
Ottonien has 22 skills covering combat, crafting, gathering and other character paths. You earn experience by practicing a skill, then spend talent points on new abilities and recipes. Characters can learn up to 60 talents, so you must choose between mastering a few fields or becoming broadly useful. The system is classless and can be reshaped by forgetting spent talents.
The required Ottonien resourcepack adds medieval building materials, custom menus, animals, enemies, weapons, armor and hundreds of other equipment items. A built-in skin creator lets players make and save historically styled character skins. OptiFine or the official Modrinth serverpack can provide the intended visual experience and extra quality-of-life features.
The setting is the island duchy of Ottonien in the North Sea, divided into five regions. Holdern serves as the ducal center and a major trading hub. The hand-built map includes villages, farms, monasteries, forests, caves, ruins, bandit camps and other discovered locations, with many areas designed to reward travel away from the main roads.
Combat includes weapon, ranged, defense and unarmed skills. Feuds and wars can become part of territorial politics between Gefolge, but PvP is tied to the roleplay setting rather than being the entire server's focus. Combat advantages come from character choices and practice as well as equipment.
Trade uses the land's currency and connects to NPC merchants, quests, crafting and local production. Food can spoil after several days unless it is preserved, so cooking and storage are practical parts of the economy. Characters can build reputations and wealth through the work their role supports.
Temporary events are part of the server's world. Recent named updates include the Holderner Summer Collection in June 2026 and the Village Churches content update in July 2026.
Roleplay is text-based and uses separate chat ranges such as whispering, speaking and calling. Players can still coordinate by voice within their Gefolge. The public German-speaking community gathers on Discord, and new players can join without an application.
Only the official Minecraft client, Fabric, Lunar Client and a small list of approved cosmetic or performance mods are allowed. Hacks, unapproved mods, player-tracking map features, VPNs, bug abuse, AFK farms and mob farms are forbidden. Players may keep one active character and one account, must respect other builds and animals, and need approval before constructing major landmarks such as castles, abbeys or churches.
The project has no pay-to-win advantages. Players can support development through Patreon, while the main gameplay systems are earned through play rather than purchases.

History of Ottonien
Ottonien began as a long-running Minecraft project in 2015, built around a historically grounded medieval roleplay setting. Early development focused on realistic worldbuilding, period-appropriate construction and a German-speaking community rather than fantasy adventure tropes.
By 2017, the project was already presenting itself as a work-in-progress historical roleplay server with its own resourcepack. Development continued toward a larger playable world with custom items, medieval building materials and systems designed around social roles.
The project expanded its gameplay during development with a hand-built island, a classless skill system, quests, points of interest and the Gefolge system. Players could form groups, claim fiefs and connect personal character stories to wider political struggles.
Ottonien entered closed beta in 2025. On August 17, 2025, the server opened a one-day public beta test that let players try quests, activities, exploration, crafting and Gefolge formation before the full release.
The public release is dated November 14, 2025. The released server combined text-based roleplay with custom weapons, armor, food, tools, skills, NPCs and a detailed medieval map.
In June 2026, Ottonien moved to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.11. The update also covered the separate build server and refreshed the resourcepack and serverpack used for custom item textures.
The current project continues to add themed content, including the Holderner Summer Collection in June 2026 and the Village Churches content update in July 2026. Today, Ottonien offers a persistent medieval setting where character development, settlement building, trade and faction politics remain closely tied to roleplay.
