About RetroMC
RetroMC brings back Minecraft Java Beta 1.7.3, including its older terrain, limited blocks, and slower survival pace. The server adds the systems a long-running community needs: account protection, homes, land claims, towns, shops, a live map, and custom server software.
Players usually settle near a town, earn money through selling goods or fighting hostile mobs, and build projects that become part of the wider world. JVillage handles protected settlements, while MobArena, ArenaFighter, Questy, seasonal shops, and community events add activities beyond ordinary survival. Beta Evolutions 2 also smooths out old-client problems without replacing the Beta look.
What Makes It Different
RetroMC keeps the real Beta 1.7.3 rules and terrain instead of recreating them inside modern Minecraft. Its custom town system, economy, and client tools make that old version practical for a long-term multiplayer world.
PvE is Minecraft gameplay centered on surviving and overcoming enemies and hazards controlled by the game rather than by other players.
The server is explicitly presented as player-versus-environment survival.
Vanilla servers use Minecraft’s original blocks, items, rules, and progression without custom gameplay systems that redefine how players play.
Gameplay stays close to Beta 1.7.3 while adding practical server plugins and custom infrastructure.
Land claims are protected areas that let a player or group control who can build, break, and interact with blocks inside a marked part of the world.
JVillage provides protected chunks, villages, outposts, and settlement management.
Survival servers let players gather resources, craft gear, build shelter, and develop a base while staying alive in a dangerous world.
The server is fundamentally a long-term survival world.
An SMP is a multiplayer Minecraft survival world where players gather resources, build, and progress alongside one another.
Player towns, shared projects, shops, and community building define the multiplayer format.
Minecraft economy gameplay makes in-game money a central way to obtain resources, upgrades, or access.
Money, admin shops, player markets, ChestShop, and mob rewards are central systems.
Survival takes place on Java Beta 1.7.3 with a mostly vanilla ruleset. Homes, teleport requests, protected containers, a live map, public shops, and community warps make daily play easier than a basic Beta server. Hostile mobs can also provide money through the server's reward system.
Progress is tied to active play as well as equipment. RetroMC's Trust system tracks activity such as time played, blocks mined, distance traveled, and blocks placed. Reaching the Citizen rank unlocks building in Spawn Town and is generally earned after substantial active play. Creating a village requires in-game money, then claims and members expand its protected territory.
JVillage is RetroMC's custom land-claim and settlement plugin. The server also runs custom software based on Project Poseidon, ChestShop, LWC protection, J-Stats, Questy, ArenaFighter, MobArena, and StarGate. Beta Evolutions 2 is the optional custom client built primarily for RetroMC.
The world uses Beta 1.7.3 terrain and is built around player settlements, community landmarks, Spawn Town, public travel points, and a browser-based map. Villages can grow from small settlements into much larger organized communities, with outposts and shared funds available through JVillage.
The main survival world is PvE rather than an open-PvP battleground. Competitive combat appears through arena activities and special events, including the tenth-anniversary tournament.
Money comes from selling items at the server shop or player market, operating ChestShop stores, trading with other players, and killing hostile mobs. Spawn Town contains the main mall and market, while the web shop directory helps players find goods and prices. Online orders through the shop system carry a 10% fee.
RetroMC has hosted anniversary tournaments, holiday shops, temporary holiday destinations, and community sendoff events. The tenth-anniversary tournament ran in June 2024, and seasonal shops have included Christmas and Halloween items.
Community life is organized around villages, shared builds, player-run shops, Spawn Town projects, and Discord. Public chat is English, while private messages can use other languages. The server also maintains a detailed public wiki covering commands, towns, ranks, claims, history, and player guides.
Griefing is forbidden, including taking over abandoned builds, farms, or bases. Hacking, cheating, duping, exploit abuse, X-ray, macros, autoclickers, and unapproved bot accounts are prohibited. Towns should be kept far enough apart to avoid claim conflicts unless neighboring owners agree. Public chat is English, and Discord users must follow Discord's rules and age requirements.
Paid donor ranks are available through the official store, ranging from Hero at $5 to Donator++ at $120. Perks include nicknames, colored chat, capes through Beta Evolutions, name-tag styling, and other convenience features. The higher Donator tiers are cosmetic.

History of RetroMC
RetroMC was created by SpacewolfE and made public on June 18, 2014. It was built for players who preferred the simpler feel of early Minecraft over the growing complexity of newer updates.
The original server shut down unexpectedly on September 9, 2016. In early 2017, JohnyMuffin revived a Beta server for former members of the old community, initially keeping it whitelist-only. RetroMC returned to public advertising in November 2017.
A major turning point came on April 13, 2018, when RetroMC and BetaLands merged under the Retro Lands name. The merger brought important community systems into RetroMC, including an economy and land protection. The projects split again in June 2018, although the Retro Lands name continued to appear during the transition.
During 2019 and 2020, the server expanded its destinations and activities. Skylands, the Holiday Shop, MobArena, and StarGate joined the network, while BetaEVO gave players a custom way to run the old client. Temporary features such as the Farlands also appeared during holiday periods.
The server replaced Towny with the custom JVillage system between December 25, 2022 and January 1, 2023. JVillage gave RetroMC its own approach to villages, chunk claims, nations, banks, and settlement growth. J-Stats and the public RetroMC Wiki also launched during 2023, making the server's systems easier to use and understand.
The related BetaLands project was retired in stages, ending public access in September 2023 and completing its final shutdown on March 2, 2024. RetroMC celebrated its tenth anniversary in June 2024 with a tournament and a redesigned nature-themed spawn island. Pistons were fully restored later that year.
Recent development has focused on keeping Beta 1.7.3 playable on modern computers. ArenaFighter, Questy, and the restored MobArena added newer activities, while Beta Evolutions 2 brought updated authentication, skins, sounds, quality-of-life settings, and optional proximity voice chat.
Today, RetroMC remains a persistent Beta survival community built around towns, protected land, player trade, custom tools, and classic Minecraft limits.
