About GunColony
GunColony turns Minecraft into a gun-focused multiplayer shooter. Players can enter objective PvP modes such as Team Deathmatch, Free For All, Kill Confirmed, Domination and King of the Hill, play one-life Defusal and Elimination rounds in Competitive, or team up against custom monsters in Mob-Arena. Special playlists add scenarios, arcade maps and unusual rule sets beyond the regular match rotation.
The current server era includes a USA-themed spawn, weapon remodels, limited-time weapon quests and the first large batch of achievements. GunColony runs on Java Edition with no mods required.
What Makes It Different
GunColony is built around unusually detailed Minecraft gunplay rather than simply adding firearm items to survival. Weapons use bullet penetration, custom hitboxes, trajectory and drop, firing-mode tradeoffs, recoil and weapon sway, while a Supply-based loadout system balances authentic weapon differences. Its custom Place Engine also connects live game data, web scoreboards and in-game systems, and the server's maps and weapon models are made by its community.
PvE is Minecraft gameplay centered on surviving and overcoming enemies and hazards controlled by the game rather than by other players.
Mob-Arena provides substantial cooperative combat against custom monsters and bosses across more than 25 arenas.
Competitive Minecraft gameplay centers on outperforming other players in contests with a clear winner, score, or relative result.
Competitive mode offers one-life Defusal and Elimination matches with dedicated weapon pricing and kill-award decisions.
Minigames are compact Minecraft games with their own rules, objective, and bounded play area, usually resolved in a single round.
The server provides multiple discrete match formats, arcade maps, scenario playlists and rotating special rules.
PvP is Minecraft gameplay centered on direct combat between players.
GunColony centers on firearm PvP through Team Deathmatch, Free For All, Kill Confirmed, Domination, King of the Hill and other playlists.
Custom Items are server-created weapons, tools, armor, or usable objects with abilities or properties beyond Minecraft’s standard items.
Custom firearms, ammunition, armor, explosives, perks and more than 100 weapon modifications define the server's combat equipment.
The main play is split between fast objective PvP, Competitive rounds, cooperative Mob-Arena and special modes. PvP includes Team Deathmatch, Free For All, Kill Confirmed, Domination, King of the Hill, Mine-Spades and Scenario Mode, which can feature historical armies or science-fiction troopers. Competitive takes inspiration from Counter-Strike with one-life Defusal and Elimination matches. Mob-Arena sends teams through waves of custom monsters and bosses across more than 25 arenas, with loot such as grenades, healing items and the Minigun. Special modes include Elytra, Gulag and Overpowered scenarios, while mutators can change health, movement and even add airstrikes on kills.
Weapons and modifications can be unlocked with XP or purchased early using gameplay-earned Tokens. Players can equip up to five modifications on a weapon from a pool of more than 100 options, including ammunition types, laser sights, magazine changes and weapon perks. The Supply-based loadout system makes players trade weapon quality against sidearms, explosives, armor and perks. Quests and achievements add longer-term goals, including the 2026 American-weapon quests and the first roughly 60 achievements.
The server uses custom plugins and the Place Engine for weapons, worlds, blocks, entities, commands, GUIs, player data, quests and web features. Gunplay includes bullet penetration, custom hitboxes, realistic projectile drop, multiple firing modes, recoil and weapon sway. The homepage describes more than 200,000 lines of custom code, while community builders have created the server's weapon models and maps. The server can also reload some gameplay objects and quest logic without restarting.
GunColony uses a rotating collection of PvP maps, special-mode maps and more than 25 Mob-Arena arenas. The server's maps include community-built environments such as King, Pool Room and ProSplash, alongside themed scenario locations. A USA Independence Day spawn and returning America Scenario playlist were added in the 2026 seasonal update.
PvP supports Team Deathmatch, Free For All, Kill Confirmed, Domination, King of the Hill, Mine-Spades and Scenario playlists across multiple maps. Players vote on maps through an in-game GUI, and the King map supports TDM, Free For All, King of the Hill and Elimination formats. Competitive adds one-life Defusal and Elimination rounds, with weapon prices and kill awards affected by the mode's economy. Rules prohibit F5 view, Sound Subtitles, F3+B hitboxes and spectator callouts in PvP.
Competitive mode uses a weapon-shop economy where players choose weapons from the server's arsenal and tune them with modifications. Weapon modifications can change both the weapon's price and its kill award, creating a tradeoff between firepower, equipment and earnings during a match. The evidence supports this match-focused equipment economy rather than a conventional survival trading system.
GunColony's update cycle includes anniversary releases, seasonal playlists and themed content. Recent examples include the Easter playlist returned with the 2025 King update, three arcade maps in June 2026, and the July 2026 USA Independence Day update with a themed spawn, American-weapon quests, remodels, achievements, fireworks and a returning America Scenario playlist. The July 4 weapon quests were scheduled to run through July 30, 2026.
Community members contribute maps and weapon models, and the server credits player feedback for years of balance and gameplay improvements. Community moderators help enforce the PvP rules and anti-cheat standards. Players can use the official Discord for discussion, support and ban appeals, while the Place Engine's web scoreboards connect match results with browser-accessible statistics.
PvP players may not use F5 third-person view, Sound Subtitles or F3+B hitboxes, and spectators may not relay information to living players. Ban or mute evasion with alternate accounts is prohibited, as are spam, toxic conduct and rule-breaking signs or builds. A ban appeal route is available through the report-submissions channel on Discord, and players who believe a staff decision was unfair can contact an administrator with evidence. The rules were updated in May 2025 to add a no-ghosting rule.
GunColony has been described as free to play for players who already own Minecraft Java Edition. In 2023, its operator identified a donation store as the server's only revenue source and discussed removing it if Mojang enforced its commercial-gun-server policy. The homepage currently includes a Store link, but the documented material does not establish specific current ranks, cosmetics, weapons or pay-to-win benefits.

Competitive mode uses a weapon shop where modifications affect both weapon prices and the kill awards players receive.
One-life matches remove respawn or continued participation after defeat, making each round's survival especially consequential.
Competitive Defusal and Elimination matches use one-life rules, so a player's defeat ends their participation in that round.

History of GunColony
GunColony launched on May 31, 2015 with the aim of building a fully featured first-person shooter inside Minecraft. Mob-Arena was part of the server's early identity, while the broader game grew around custom firearms, maps and competitive matches.
In June 2022, work began on a separate codebase intended to support a future standalone FPS and voxel-sandbox experience alongside the Minecraft server. A 2023 development article described plans for shared infrastructure, continued Minecraft compatibility and eventual standalone access. It also addressed the effect of Mojang's commercial-gun-server policy and the possibility of removing the donation store if enforcement required it.
The 2024 ninth-anniversary update marked a major technical step with the Place Engine, browser-based live and historical scoreboards, improved player-data handling and a plan for smaller, more frequent updates. In 2025, the King update added a new PvP map, restored an Easter playlist and acknowledged both joining problems and an overly slow release schedule. The 2026 update series continued with FishColony, Lobby, anniversary and Arcade updates before the USA Independence Day update added achievements, weapon quests, remodels and a returning America Scenario playlist.
